Many topics in multilingual education – such as linguistic mediation, the development of metalinguistic competences or the acquisition of biliteracy – can be explored both theoretically and experimentally through multilingual children's literature. Recent research suggests that bilingual picturebooks can initiate a journey between languages and cultures, enabling integrated learning in two languages based on intercultural experiences. Traditional bilingual picturebooks typically present two complete, parallel language versions – often the original text and its translation. Translingual picturebooks, on the other hand, tell stories by switching between or blending languages.
This presentation analyses the Franco-German picturebook Der Schrei. Le loup migrant by Patrice Seiler (Kidikunst, 2019). The aim is to evaluate the pedagogical potential of this translingual picturebook for a multimodal approach across linguistic and cultural borders.
Referentin: Dr. Esa Hartmann, Universität Strassburg, Frankreich
